It is acknowledged in the industry that scrap steel is not all useless, as reusable raw materials, which has an increasing influence on steel industry. On October 27th, 2021 National Seminar Series on Scrap Steel Market – Jiangsu Regional Conference was held in Xuzhou. Laiyue Regeneration, as an emerging Internet service platform of scrap steel industry, was invited to attend the meeting. Laiyue Regeneration, established in 2018, has become one of the leading forces of scrap steel industry after 3 years of rapid development. Up to now, its online trading volume has exceeded 20 billion yuan, and the total supply of scrap steel has exceeded 10 million tons.
15 years ago, Huang graduated from Peking University with a mathematics degree. Relying on his distinguished resume and excellent skills, he used to work in China Telecom, Renren, etc., in charging of data research and development. He has participated in several overseas projects. The products led by him were released internationally in over 10 languages, with a large amount of users, which brought him both reputation and benefits. However, four years ago, he just gave up his flourishing career, and devoted himself into scrap steel industry.
“The pain points and difficulties in scrap steel industry seriously restrict its development. Under the existing system, it is difficult to make a breakthrough. As a technophile, this inspired me to start my own business. In recent years, the widespread application of Internet, blockchain, cloud computing, big data and other technologies has provided technical foundations to solve the problems of regeneration industry. The digital transformation of traditional industries is an inevitable stage of Internet development. I hope to use technology to empower and fuel industry development. This idea hit it off with my partners, and after a period of research, Laiyue Regeneration was born.” When it comes to the original intention of Laiyue, Huang was excited.
When asked if he had ever regretted switching from “sophisticated” industry to be a “scrap man”, Huang said, “To be frank, most of my classmates have become the key personnel of Huawei, Tencent, etc. during those years. In contrast, the scrap steel industry I chose was not that “fabulouse”, and I was often misunderstood by my family like what I am doing is no difference with waste collection. However, this does not hinder my determination and enthusiasm. I am still eager to let those technologies to take root in traditional industries and bring new atmosphere, new energy and new development to them.
In terms of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, Huang said: “Among all manufacturing industries in China, steel industry is the most carbon-emitting one, accounting for about 15% the total. Recycling 1 ton of scrap steel can reduce 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which can save the use of 1.4 tons of iron ore and 740 kg of coal. Moreover, the energy consumed by steel products produced from 1 ton of scrap steel is only about one-third of that consumed by the original process. Obviously, accelerating the utilization of scrap steel can not only help the steel industry to reduce costs and increase efficiency, but also help to promote energy conservation and emission reduction. China is rich in scrap resources, it is estimated that the total amount in 2025 will reach 300-320 million tons, and in 2030 the number will be 350-380 million tons. The carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals are bound to boost the demand of scrap steel. Steel enterprises also have more motivated to use scrap steel as smelting material. Therefore, it is imperative to promote the transformation and upgrading of scrap steel industry.”
“On the one hand, many positive factors, such as the support of national policy, the requirement of social development, the readjustment of industry structure, really provide a sound market environment and much confidence for the development of recycling industry. On the other hand, technology empowerment also makes the renewable resource industry gradually transformed from extensive to standardizing, intensive and normalizing. Currently, it is the golden time to reshape the industrial chain and ecological chain of renewable resources.
